Town Centre Pedestrian Bridge in Mitchells Plain repaired

The City of Cape Town’s Urban Mobility Directorate has completed repairs to the Town Centre Pedestrian Bridge in Mitchells Plain. The repairs formed part of the City’s routine maintenance to extend the service life of the bridge and to ensure public safety.

The main scope of the repair work entailed:

Full replacement of various structural steel bridge elements, which were badly corroded beyond repair.
Surface preparation, cleaning and protective coating of all bridge structural steel work.
Repairs to the side of the composite deck slab, and coating it with a cementitious protective coating.
Replacement of shattered glass balustrade panels over the railway line.
Cleaning and resealing existing expansion joints.
Repairing and cleaning the existing drainage system.

'Over the years, this bridge has deteriorated and has also been vandalised. The bridge consists of a full structural steel frame, closed roof and a composite deck floor throughout. It crosses the Central railway line approximately 170m from Mitchells Plain train station, allowing safe access across the railway line for residents from Portland and surrounding areas to the Town Centre Public Transport Interchange. Infrastructure such as this forms part of our non-motorised installations, which aim toward our mission to keep Capetonians moving, safely. We ask that residents look after this bridge and report any suspected vandalism attempts,' said the City's Mayoral Committee Member for Urban Mobility, Councillor Rob Quintas.
